DEVILS FALL TO HOT WEST LIBERTY SALEM IN TOURNEY
The Brookville Blue Devils saw their season come to an end to a hot shooting, big, strong, and physical West Liberty Salem squad in the Sectional Tournament at Tecumseh last week by the score of 55 to 37. The loss ended the Devils season with a record of 7-16 and the basketball careers of five seniors for the Blue Devils. Luke Landis, Wes Zellers, Austin Kuck, Cory Weaver, and Josh Childers saw their Blue Devil basketball careers end.
Brookville played very hard and defensively did a really nice job on stopping the inside game of the much taller Tigers. However, West Liberty Salem was red hot shooting the ball, making 18 of 34 shots during the game, most of them challenged but on target. That included an incredible 8 of 14 from behind the three point line. The Tigers were 5 of 8 from the field in the first period alone and hit 6 of their first 8 three point tries in the first half.
The Devils shot 15 of 48 for the game and were 3 of 18 behind the arch.
Brookville never led although did have the game tied twice early at 2 to 2 and 4 to 4. However then Max Bailey drained back to back 3 pointers and the Tigers were never headed.
West Liberty led 13 to 9 after the first period and appeared ready to run away from Brookville in the second frame. It was 21 to 12 when Brookville put together a brief run. Marcus Brisco scored on a drive. Logan Delk made a free throw. Landis scored on a lay in and then with a pair of free throws. That made it 21 to 19 with 3:18 left in the first half. However, Grant Burden scored on a drive 13 seconds later to regain the momentum for the Tigers.
West Liberty slowly pulled away in the second half. Brookville held the Tigers to only 11 points in the third period but could only manage 6 points, three from Derek Day on a trifecta late in the period.
Brookville battled to the end but simply were overmatched because of the Tigers accurate shooting.
In many respects Brookville played West Liberty even or had the better of the play in hustle plays, but shooting was the ultimate difference in the game. When a team shoots 57% it is hard to overcome, especially when you shoot less than 30%.
West Liberty was led in scoring by Grant Burden with 16, Landon Horman with 13 points, and Travis Mayse with 14 markers.
Brookville scoring shows Luke Landis with 16 points to lead Brookville. Derek Day had 3, Logan Delk 4, Wes Zellers 6, and Marcus Brisco 8.
For Brookville it was a season of much improvement and with a few breaks could have won a few more games. However, in all it was a good season and hopefully the underclassmen will do the offseason work needed to take the program a step further.
This reporter would like to extend a huge thank you to Coach Jeff Davidson and his staff for their cooperation during the season. Also, my sincere thank you to Roger Hoover, Brookville scorebook keeper, for providing statistical information throughout the season. Hoover has been keeping the Brookville scorebook since the early 1990’s.
BROOKVILLE COMEBACK STUNS OAKWOOD AT PIT
It was another in what has become routine at the Pit in Oakwood, a strange basketball game between Brookville and Oakwood. This time Brookville came out on top by scoring the final 8 points of the game, the final 6 in the last 40 seconds to win 55 to 52. The victory ended the regular season with Brookville sporting a record of 7 wins and 15 losses.

Brookville had never led and had 4 times had the ball down 3 points and twice turned the ball over and twice missed three point shots.
Oakwood passed the ball in bounds and the Lumberjack player, a freshman on the team, turned and dribbled to the Brookville basket and laid the ball in the hoop with 40 seconds left to give Brookville 2 points and make the score 52 to 51. The credit for the points for Brookville goes to the player closest to the basket and that was Senior Wes Zellers, who can now boast his final two points he scored as a senior in the regular season were a gift by an opponent.
After the basket both teams seemed stunned as what to do. Brookville grabbed the ball and then whistles were blown to give Oakwood possession of the ball.
On the inbounds play Brookville’s Luke Landis tipped the ball loose and stole the ball. A quick pass to Marcus Brisco saw the sophomore drive to the hoop where he was fouled while shooting. Brisco hit the charity tosses with 32.6 seconds left and the Devils had their first lead of the game at 53 to 52.

Derek Day tied the game with 5:50 left at 47. Here Oakwood got a three pointer from Murphy and a basket by Neff to make it 52 to 47 with 4:26 left in the game.
Zellers then scored with 3:40 remaining to cut the margin to 3 at 52 to 49. Brookville played solid defense and after stops had 4 separate occasions to try and tie the game with a three pointer, but as mentioned before two turnovers and two missed shots occurred. That set the stage for the exciting and stunning final 45 seconds of the game and the Brookville win.

EAGLES HALF COURT SHOT DOWNS DEVILS
Brookville lost a pair of SWBL Southwestern Division games this week. Brookville lost on a half-court shot as time ran out to Bellbrook 54 to 52 on Tuesday. Then the Devils ran into a buzz saw at Franklin as the Wildcats crunched Brookville 71 to 48.
Turnabout is fair play goes the saying. Bellbrook defeated Brookville on a last second midcourt three point heave to defeat the Brookville Blue Devils 54 to 52 last week at Brookville. The loss was a tough pill for Brookville to swallow but it was the same pill Brookville forced Bellbrook to swallow back in December as Brookville won on a last second shot by Marcus Brisco on the Eagles home court.
The games were amazingly similar throughout. Brookville led 29 to 24 at halftime Tuesday night. It was 34 to 33 Bellbrook after 3 periods of play and then the final of 54 to 52 Eagles.
The final frame began as Wes Zellers made a basket, was fouled and hit the free throw to put Brookville in the lead at 36 to 34. Derek Day drained a trifecta moments later and it was 39 to 35 Brookville with 6:46 to go. However, Bellbrook got a hoop to make it 39 to 37. With 4:23 to go Brookville was called for a foul and when the Devils player showed his disagreement he was called for a technical foul. The Eagles missed the free throw off the foul. Then Doug Rasch hit one of the technical charity shots. On the possession, Rasch drained a three pointer to give the Eagles the lead at 41 to 39. Rasch scored again and it was 43 to 39.
Brisco scored inside and made a free throw to cut the deficit to 1. After an Eagle charity shot Derek Day drained a three and the game was tied at 45 with 2:55 left. Hisey scored inside for the Eagles. Luke Landis hit a base line jumper with 2:16 left to the game at 47.
Rasch stole the ball and made a lay-up to give the Eagles the lead at the 1:15 mark 49 to 47. Brookville worked the clock and got the ball to Wes Zellers on the base line near the hoop. Zellers made a move inside went up and scored with 6 seconds left to give Brookville a 52 to 51 lead.
The inbounds pass came to Rasch; he dribbled to midcourt and was closely guarded. Just before the center line Rasch jumped up and let launched the ball from his right hip. While the ball was in the air at the rim the buzzer sounded and the ball went through the basket to give Bellbrook the thrilling win 54 to 52.
A month earlier Bellbrook had taken a 1 point lead with 5 seconds left before a full court inbounds pass found Brisco who drove into the lane and made a basket for Brookville to win at the buzzer.
Scoring for Bellbrook has Rasch with 27 points. Hisey added 10, Malapit 3, Hall 7, Jabir 3, Rogers 2, and Vine 2 points. The Eagles had 20 field goals with 7 being three pointers, 4 from Rasch. Brookville traveled to Franklin and the Wildcats came out on fire dominating every phase of the game. The Cats scored the first 8 points of the game and parlayed the start to a 26 to 10 first period advantage. Franklin rolled to an eventual 71 to 48 win.
Franklin owned the boards in the first half as they out rebounded the Devils by a huge margin, especially on the offensive end of the court. The fact that Franklin took 70 shots during the game to the Blue Devils 52 shows how many times the Wildcats got extra shots in the game. Franklin was 28 of 70 for the night, including 22 of 48 for 2 pointers and 6 of 22 from behind the arch. Brookville was 19 of 52 including 2 of 14 in three point attempts. The Hornets shot 48% from the field making 19 of 40 shots during the game.
Brookville led after the first period of play 15 to 14. Austin Kuck scored 4 points, Josh Childers 3, Derek Day 2, and Marcus Brisco 6 in the frame for Brookville. Meanwhile Chris Slonaker, the Hornets tall and mobile center, was simply too much inside for Brookville to handle throughout the period and the game. Slonaker scored 19 points to lead his squad in points. Jake Little, a smallish point guard, played big as he scored 14 points, all in the first half, and getting 12 on 4 three pointers.
