                       BROOKVILLE HOLDS OFF BLAZERS

 

            The Brookville Blue Devils managed to hold off a spirited effort by the National Trail Blazers Tuesday night and escape with a 51 to 48 victory. The win lifted Brookville to a 3-2 record on the season.

            The Blue Devils asserted themselves early in the game, scoring ten straight points after the Blazers garnered the first hoop by Bailey Stewart. Marcus Brisco scored inside to tie the game. 45 seconds later Brisco gave Brookville the lead on a fast break. Derek Day did the same with just under 5 minutes left in the first frame. Cameron Alber scored inside off a pass from Day to make it 8 to 2 and the run ended when Devon Pennington scored inside off a pass from Brisco. The Blazers scored on a trifecta by Michael Bane and a basket by Stewart to make it 10 to 7.

            Brookville ended the first period on a Devon Cook free throw, another basket by Alber, and a drive by Brad Cox. It was 15 to 7 after 8 minutes of play.

            The second period was sluggish as both teams missed shots. Trail cut the margin to 15 to 11 with 5:23 left in the half. Brookville did not score until Dalton Stewart drained a three pointer with 3:05 to go. Brisco scored off a pass from Day with 2 minutes left and Nathan Middlestetter scored on a lay up to end the first half with Brookville up 22 to 11.

            The teams traded hoops to begin the third frame. It was 28 to 15 Brookville after Collin Kindell scored off a fine pass by Brad Cox with 5:38 left. It was the largest lead of the game.  Trail scored the next 8 points. The run ended when Kindell scored on a back door cut and a fine pass by Day. Brisco hit a trifecta, but the Blazers scored 4 straight to make it 33 to 27. Here Brisco scored on a drive and fouled. Marcus drained the subsequent free throw before Trail hit a buzzer beater to make the score 36 to 29 after 3 periods of action.

            Early in the final frame Dalton Stewart scored on a basket and free throw to give Brookville a 10 point lead at 39 to 29. However, the Blazers scored 8 of the next 9 points to close to within three, 40 to 37, with just under 4 minutes left in the game.

            Alber made a bunny after a nice pass from Brisco to make it 42 to 37 with 3 minutes left. The teams traded baskets on the next 4 possessions. Brad Cox and Devon Cook scored for Brookville.  With 1:27 left Bane hit a three pointer to make the score 46 to 44 Brookville. Brisco made two free throws with 1:13 to go and 1 charity shot with 46 seconds left to give Brookville a five point lead at 49 to 44. 

            With 37 seconds left Stewart of Trail hit a basket to make it 49 to 46. Brookville turned the ball over but Trail missed a three pointer and Cody Cox grabbed the rebound. Derek Day was fouled with 6 seconds left and hit a pair of free throws to seal the win. Trail made a basket at the buzzer to make the final score 51 to 48.

            Stats from Roger Hoover show Brookville committed 15 turnovers and Trail 10. Brookville was 20 of 45 shooting, making 18 of 34 two point tries. Trail was 20 of 56 overall, making 16 of 42 two point tries. Brookville was a paltry 9 of 19 from the foul line and Trail 4 of 4.

            Trail was led in scoring by Bailey Stewart with 16, Michael Bane 14, and Niko Nakis with 10. Brookville scoring shows Marcus Brisco with 15; Derek Day 7; Brad Cox 6; Dalton Stewart 6; Cameron Alber 6; Collin Kindell 4; Devon Cook 3; Devin Pennington 2; and Nathan Middlestetter 2.

            Brookville plays three times next week, at Eaton Tuesday, hosting Valley View Friday and at Twin Valley South Saturday.

 

                        OAKWOOD HOLDS OFF BROOKVILLE

 

            Brookville lost a heartbreaker to Oakwood Tuesday night 56 to 54. The loss dropped Brookville to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the SWBL Southwestern Division.

            Brookville had a chance to win the game with a 3 point shot in the final second but a shot was blocked by a Lumberjack just before the horn went off to end the game.

            The Blue Devils had rallied from 11 points down in the third period to take the lead several times, but each time Brookville grabbed the lead Oakwood answered with a basket on the next possession. The Devils simply never could establish any sort of control of the game.

            “We did not play well in the first half and that cost us the game” stated Brookville Coach Jeff Davidson. “We have to play 32 minutes of basketball and we have not done that so far this season.”

            Brookville trailed 18 to 14 after the first period and 34 to 24 at the half. Brookville battled back in the third period as Cameron Alber, Collin Kindell, Dalton Stewart and Marcus Brisco made baskets in the rally. Brisco drained a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to 41 to 40 heading into the final frame.

            Kindell drained a trifecta to give Brookville the lead at 45 to 44. However Oakwood answered with a basket by Michael Hoecht. Moments later Alber hit a free throw to give Brookville the lead again at 47 to 46. However Nick Baker answered with a 3 point shot to once again give the Jacks the lead.

            Trailing by 4 Derek Day drained a 3 to make the score 53 to 52 Jacks with 1:02 left. However Baker hit 2 free throws for Oakwood. Alber scored inside for Brookville with 17 seconds left. Baker made a free throw with 10 seconds left to make the score 56 to 54. Brookville scurried down court and heaved up a desperation 3 that was blocked as the buzzer sounded giving Oakwood the win.

            Michael Hoecht scored 17 points, 11 in the first frame as Oakwood took control under the hoop. Nick Baker added 19 for the Jacks, including 11 in the final frame. Sam Banke added 12 for Oakwood.

            Brookville got 17 from Marcus Brisco, 13 from Collin Kindell, and a career high 11 from Cameron Alber. Also scoring for Brookville was Day with 5, Brad Cox 3, Dalton Stewart 3, and Devon Cook 2.

            Oakwood made 55% of their shots, 23 of 42. Brookville shot 44% for the game. Amazingly the Devils shot 44% from behind the arch and from 2 point land as well. Oakwood was 6 of 10 from the foul line and Brookville was 6 of 13. The Blue Devils had 9 turnovers and Oakwood 5.

 

                        BIG SECOND HALF SENDS BROOKVILLE PAST DIXIE

 

            The annual game between Brookville and Dixie was everything you normally expect when these two teams get together on the basketball court. The game was tight and played with emotion as the teams traded blows during the first half. The score was 27 all after the first 16 minutes of action in New Lebanon. However, the second half saw the Blue Devils establish control of the game on both ends of the court and roll to a 67 to 49 victory.

            Brookville is now 2-1 overall and Dixie fell to 1-3.

            The entire first half was back and forth basketball.  Dixie scored first as Cody Grubb grabbed a rebound and scored. Brookville answered as Brad Cox made a lay-up. Brookville took the lead as Collin Kindell scored on a back door play off a nice pass from Derek Day. However, Grubb banged in a three pointer and Zach Radar scored on a fast break to give Dixie the lead at 7 to 4. Marcus Brisco made a charity shot and Brad Cox drained a trifecta and Brookville regained the lead at 8 to 7. The remaining part of the first quarter saw the lead exchange hands on each basket. Justin Leonard made a basket for Dixie, Devon Cook scored for Brookville, Blake Miller scored on a drive for Dixie and Cook made a three pointer for Brookville. The period ended after Leonard made three free throws. Dixie led 14 to 13 after the first period.

            In the second quarter the same pattern occurred for the most part. Brisco hit a 3 for Brookville. Joey Gengler scored on a drive, Dalton Stewart responded by tickling the twine from behind the arch. Shane Hale made a basket for Dixie and Miller drained a three. Brad Cox made a charity shot for Brookville and Leonard hot a three pointer for Dixie. The Hounds led 24 to 20. Cox and Brisco hit consecutive shots for Brookville before Hale drained a trifecta for Dixie to make it 27 to 24 Hounds. Stewart hit a charity shot for Brookville and Cody Cox sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at the half at 27.

            The third period was all Brookville. Brisco made a pair of free throws to give Brookville the lead at 29 to 27. The Blue Devils never trailed again. Brookville scored the first 9 points of the half. Cameron Alber scored off a nice pass from Day. Day then scored twice on fast break coast to coast drives sandwiched around a free throw to make it 36 to 27. Miller of Dixie ended the run with a hoop. However, Brisco and Day responded with hoops for Brookville. Dixie got a basket from Hale. Brisco responded with a three for the Devils, Austin Simpson scored for Dixie, and Day ended the third quarter with a flashy drive through the lane to score just before the buzzer. Brookville led 45 to 33 after three periods of play.

            Dixie never got any closer as Brookville continued to stretch the lead as Day scored 7 in the final period to end up with a game high 16 points, all coming in the second half. The second half was as good a half of basketball as Brookville has played in the past several years in every phase of the game.

            Brookville hit 26 of 47 shots during the game, most importantly Brookville made 20 of 26 shots from inside the arch. Dixie was 18 of 46 for the game, 13 of 28 from 2 point land. Brookville had 12 turnovers and Dixie 11.

            Scoring for Dixie shows Leonard with 13; Hale 10, Miller 9, Grubb 8, Kaleb Rutledge 1, Simpson 2, Gengler 2, and Radar 4.

            Brookville scoring had Day with 16, Brisco 13, Brad Cox 12, Cook 7, Cody Cox 5, Stewart 4, Kindell 4, Alber 4, and Devin Pennington2.

            Day had 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 7 assists in his best game of the season. Alber and Cook each had 4 boards and Brisco had 7 rebounds, a pair of assists and 2 steals

            Brookville will host Oakwood on Tuesday the 23rd; the game was moved because of Oakwood taking tests this week. Dixie is at Preble Shawnee Friday and at Tri-County North Saturday.

                        BROOKVILLE EDGES HORNETS FOR FIRST WIN

 

            The Brookville Blue Devils made the most plays down the stretch in the final frame and came from behind to defeat the Monroe Hornets 49 to 45 last Friday night. The win earned Brookville their first win of the season and most importantly was a road victory in league play. The Blue Devils are now 1-1 in the SWBL Southwestern Division. Brookville is 2-1 overall after Saturdays win at Dixie (see separate story).

            This game was tight throughout as the teams traded blows. Monroe had the best of the early part of the game building up a 13 to 6 lead just before Nathan Middlestetter drained a long 3 just as the buzzer sounder to end the frame. Middlestetter was off balance as he flung the desperation toss towards the bucket with a high arch that eventually swished through the cords of the net. The first period ended 13 to 9 Hornets.

            Brookville turned the shot into a surge that lasted through the second period, winning the frame 13 to 8 to snatch a one point, 22 to 21, half time advantage. Brookville was getting contributions from everyone on both ends of the court. Derek Day, Collin Kindell, Cameron Alber, Dalton Stewart, Marcus Brisco, and Middlestetter all scored in the first half and played strong defense the majority of the game.

            Alber scored 4 quick points in the third frame underneath off good passes from Brookville. Derek Day scored a couple of baskets as the teams battled back and forth. Noah Kappers and Christian Jones were the best players for Monroe this night as they scored 15 and 14 points on the night respectively.

            With a minute and half left in the third period Day scored on a drive to give Brookville a 33 to 32 lead. After a stop, Brookville whittled the time down and Marcus Brisco made a move on the side of the court and drove to the hoop and made a basket just before the buzzer to give Brookville a 35 to 32 advantage.

            In the final frame Kappers drained a 3 to tie the game at 35. After Brisco scored inside for Brookville, Monroe got a three point play the old fashioned way on a basket and a charity shot by Connor Curtis to give the Hornets a 38 to 37 lead. Just under 5 ½ minutes remained in the game.

            Cody Cox made two free throws to give Brookville the lead at 39 to 38 and then Jones hit a foul shot to tie the game with 4:07 left in the contest.

            Brisco then hit a short jumper in the lane to give Brookville the lead for good. Brisco then grabbed several defensive rebounds and scored on a drive and ensuing charity shot to give Brookville a 4 point advantage at 44 to 40. Brookville then hit free throws to hang on for the win. Brisco made both ends of the 1 and 1 with 1:37 left. Brad Cox did the same with 45 seconds remaining. The Hornets did hit a three pointer between the free throws and Brookville led by 3 at 48 to 45.

            Monroe worked the ball to Jones who tried to drive inside, but he was called for an offensive foul. Day then sealed the game with a free throw with 11 seconds left and Brookville won 49 to 45.

            Scoring for Brookville shows Brisco with 15 points, Day 9, Alber 7, Middlestetter 5, Kindell 5, Brad Cox 4, Cody Cox 2, and Stewart 2. Brisco had 9 rebounds 3 assists and a block during the game. Cody Cox had 5 rebounds.
